Here’s the thing about Durres in October – it’s a bit of a gamble, but honestly a pretty calculated one.

The summer circus has packed up and left. Those shoulder-to-shoulder beach crowds that turn the esplanade into something resembling a slow-motion stampede from June through August? Gone. You’ll actually be able to walk without negotiating with a family of twelve. The sea is still warm enough to swim in for most of the month, holdover heat from summer, and some days you’ll have stretches of beach almost entirely to yourself. That part feels genuinely special.

Weather-wise, October in Durres is unpredictable in the classic Mediterranean autumn way. Early October often delivers warm, sunny days in the low-to-mid twenties. Then around mid-month, things can shift. Rain becomes a real possibility, sometimes arriving in proper heavy bursts rather than polite drizzle. You might get glorious beach weather for a week straight, or you might spend days watching grey skies over the Adriatic. There’s no getting around that uncertainty.

What’s still open is the real question. The Roman amphitheatre, the Archaeological Museum, the Byzantine forum remnants – those don’t close for seasonal holidays. Restaurants and cafes along the waterfront are largely still operating, though some of the bigger beach clubs and seasonal bars will have shuttered. The town has its own domestic Albanian tourism year-round, so it doesn’t become a ghost town the way some purely foreign-tourist destinations do.

Is it worth visiting? If you want sun-lounger beach holiday guarantees, book elsewhere or come earlier. But if you like wandering around an underrated ancient city without sweating through your clothes, eating good seafood without waiting for tables, and paying noticeably less for accommodation, October has genuine appeal. It suits independent travellers and history-curious types particularly well.

**Practical tip:** Bring a proper rain jacket, not just a light layer. When October rain arrives here, it doesn’t mess around, and you’ll want to keep exploring rather than hiding in your hotel.
