# St Julian’s in February: The Honest Version

Here’s the thing about St Julian’s in February – it’s genuinely weird, and whether that’s good or bad depends entirely on what you’re after.

The weather is the great unknown. Malta in February sits in that awkward shoulder season where you might get bright, crisp sunshine hitting 16 or 17 degrees, which honestly feels glorious if you’re escaping a Northern European winter. Or you might get four consecutive days of low cloud and driving rain off the Mediterranean that makes Spinola Bay look genuinely bleak. There’s no reliable way to predict which version you’ll get, so pack accordingly and don’t build your trip around sitting on a terrace.

What you will get, without question, is the place to yourself. Paceville – the nightlife strip that becomes a sweaty, chaotic mess from June onwards – is either closed or running on fumes. Some bars and restaurants pull their shutters completely for January and February, doing renovations or simply taking a break. Walk around the waterfront on a Tuesday morning and you might pass three other tourists total. For some people that’s depressing. For others it’s exactly the point.

The genuine pleasures of February here are quieter ones. Wandering around the Balluta Bay area without negotiating crowds. Getting a table anywhere you want without booking. Conversations with locals who actually have time to talk. The light on good days is extraordinary – sharp and clean in a way that summer’s heat haze destroys.

Is it worth visiting? If you want beach clubs, boat parties and buzzing nightlife, genuinely no. Come back in May at the earliest. But if you’re a slower traveller, a photographer, someone wanting cheap accommodation and space to breathe while using Malta as a base for exploring Valletta and the Three Cities, February works surprisingly well.

**Practical tip:** Check restaurant opening hours before you go anywhere specific. Don’t assume because a place has a website and Instagram presence that it’s actually open in February. Call ahead. Seriously.
