Where to Stay in Mellieha

Where to Stay in Mellieha

Mellieha sits at the northern tip of Malta, and where you bed down here makes a genuine difference to your experience. The village itself, perched on a ridge with sweeping views toward Gozo, is the sweet spot for mid-range travellers. Staying in the upper village puts you within walking distance of decent restaurants, the local bakery, and the parish church, while still being a short drive or bus ride from Mellieha Bay below. Boutique guesthouses and smaller four-star hotels in this area typically run between 80 and 130 euros per night during summer, offering clean rooms, good breakfast spreads, and that balance between comfort and authenticity that mid-range travel is really about.

The bay area itself, down the hill from the village, works well if you want beach access without much effort. Several apartment-style hotels and family-run complexes sit close to the sand and are reasonably priced outside peak August weeks. The trade-off is that you’re more dependent on a car or the bus to reach anything beyond the beach, and the strip can feel a little generic in the evenings.

What to avoid is the Qammieħ area on the far northern tip unless you specifically want isolation. It looks attractive on a map but leaves you genuinely stranded without a vehicle and the accommodation there tends to be overpriced for what you get.

A practical tip across all budget levels is to check whether your accommodation includes parking. Mellieha village has surprisingly limited street parking, and hidden daily fees can quietly inflate a mid-range stay. Budget travellers do well searching for rooms above local family-run bars or small guesthouses on the main road, which rarely appear on the bigger platforms but offer honest value. Splurging slightly gets you terrace views that are worth every cent.

The booking mistake people consistently make is reserving a room in Mellieha Bay thinking it means the beach is literally outside the door. The bay is longer than it looks online, and some listed properties are a solid fifteen-minute walk from the water. Always check the exact pin on a map before confirming.
