Visiting Petrovac in August
# Petrovac in August: What You’re Actually Getting Into
Let’s be straight with you: August in Petrovac is peak season, full stop. This small Montenegrin coastal town transforms from a genuinely charming fishing village into something considerably more chaotic. The pebble beach gets packed early, and by mid-morning you’re essentially negotiating for space with your elbows.
The weather is almost certainly hot. We’re talking the Adriatic coast in high summer, so expect temperatures pushing into the low-to-mid thirties regularly. Rain is unlikely but not impossible – the odd thunderstorm can roll in, especially later in the month, but you’re broadly looking at sunshine and clear water. That water, incidentally, is beautiful and warm enough to swim in all day without complaint.
The crowds are predominantly Serbian, Russian, and Eastern European families, plus a growing number of Western visitors who’ve figured out Montenegro is cheaper than Croatia. The town’s two small beaches fill up fast, and the promenade restaurants get noisy and service gets stretched. Prices spike noticeably compared to shoulder season.
Here’s the honest part though: almost everything is open and buzzing. The seafood restaurants are serving fresh catch daily, boat trips to the island of Sveti Nikola are running constantly, and the general atmosphere is lively if you’re into that. The old stone walls and pine trees still look gorgeous. Petrovac hasn’t been totally swallowed by development the way Budva has, so it retains something worth visiting.
Is it worth it in August? Depends entirely on who you are. If you like warmth, swimming, cold beer in the evening, and don’t mind sharing your experience with several hundred other people, genuinely yes. If you’re seeking quiet discovery and value, you’re going to be frustrated.
**Practical tip:** Arrive at the beach before 9am. Seriously. The difference between 8:45am and 10am is the difference between a lovely morning and spending thirty minutes hunting for a spot while sweating through your t-shirt before you’ve even touched the water.
