Where to Stay in Paphos
Where to Stay in Paphos
Paphos splits fairly neatly into two distinct zones, and understanding which suits you makes a real difference to your trip. Kato Paphos, the lower coastal area, is where most visitors end up, and for good reason. You’re walking distance from the harbour, the main restaurant strip, the archaeological park, and the beach clubs. For mid-range travellers, this is the sweet spot. Hotels here in the three to four star bracket typically run between €80 and €150 per night depending on season, and you get genuine walkability in return, which saves money on taxis throughout the week.
Paphos Town, sometimes called Ktima, sits on the hill above and has a more local, unhurried feel. It’s less touristy, and if you rent a car, staying up here can mean better value and a quieter night’s sleep. A handful of boutique guesthouses and smaller hotels offer comfortable rooms at slightly lower prices than the seafront equivalents, and the municipal market and authentic tavernas nearby are genuinely good. The downside is that without a car, getting to the beach each day becomes a mild inconvenience rather than a spontaneous decision.
The strip heading east toward Geroskipou has expanded considerably and offers plenty of all-inclusive resorts. Some are decent, but many feel isolated, surrounded by busy roads with little character nearby. Unless you plan to stay put entirely, this area tends to disappoint mid-range travellers who want to actually experience the town.
For budget visitors, self-catering apartments in Kato Paphos offer excellent value, particularly outside July and August. For mid-range, aim for hotels with a pool that aren’t directly on the noisy harbour square, maybe one or two streets back. The difference in price is small but the sleep quality improvement is significant. Luxury travellers should look at the clifftop properties north of the harbour toward Coral Bay.
The booking mistake people consistently make is choosing a hotel purely based on beach proximity without checking whether there’s actually a usable beach nearby. Much of Paphos coastline is rocky, so confirm specifically what the beach access looks like before committing.
