Tangier has gone through a genuine transformation over the past decade, and finding good budget accommodation here is easier than many travelers expect, though you still need to know where to look. The medina is the obvious starting point for budget travelers, and for good reason. Staying inside the old city puts you close to the main sights, the ferry terminal, and the best street food, and guesthouses here regularly come in well under thirty euros a night. The area around the Grand Socco and Petit Socco has the highest concentration of budget riads and hostels, and the atmosphere is genuinely lively without feeling overwhelming. Look for places slightly off the main tourist drag within the medina to get better prices without sacrificing location.

The Ville Nouvelle, the French-built district just outside the medina walls, is worth considering if you want slightly more breathing room and easier access to the train station. Mid-range budget travelers will find small hotels here offering clean rooms with private bathrooms for reasonable prices. It lacks the character of the medina but it is quieter and easier to navigate, which some people genuinely prefer.

Avoid the port area itself. It looks convenient on a map but the immediate surroundings are scrappy and the accommodation quality rarely matches even modest expectations. The area around the old Spanish quarter can also feel isolated at night.

One booking mistake people consistently make in Tangier is not checking whether a medina guesthouse is actually accessible by car or taxi. Many are located down narrow alleyways where no vehicle can follow, which matters a lot when you arrive with heavy luggage after a long ferry crossing.

For the tightest budgets, hostels near the medina offer dormitory beds and often include simple breakfast, which takes real pressure off daily costs. Solo travelers should ask specifically about smaller dorms since mixed eight-bed rooms vary wildly in quality. Always read recent reviews because management changes quickly here and a brilliant guesthouse from two years ago can be a different experience entirely today.
