Where to Stay in Gjirokaster

Gjirokaster is one of Albania’s most rewarding destinations for budget travelers, largely because it remains genuinely off the beaten path and prices reflect that reality. The old bazaar area and the streets climbing toward the UNESCO-listed castle are where you want to base yourself, and fortunately this is also where accommodation tends to be cheapest and most atmospheric. Staying in a traditional Ottoman stone house that has been converted into a guesthouse costs between eight and twenty euros per night in most seasons, and you get character that no mid-range hotel in Western Europe could match at ten times the price.

The area around Gjiro Hostel and the handful of family-run guesthouses on Palorto neighborhood streets is the sweet spot. You are walking distance from everything worth seeing, hosts typically speak enough English to be helpful, and breakfast is often included or available for a euro or two extra. The steep cobblestone streets are genuinely steep, so if you have mobility concerns or heavy luggage, think carefully before booking anything on the upper slopes.

Avoid staying near the new city down the hill. It is cheaper in some cases but you will pay in walking time and taxi costs every single day, and the area has none of the charm that makes Gjirokaster worth visiting in the first place.

For budget travelers, the single most practical tip is to book directly by email or phone rather than relying exclusively on booking platforms. Many small guesthouses here are family operations that list only a fraction of their rooms online, and emailing them directly often unlocks better prices and more flexibility on check-in times.

The booking mistake people consistently make is assuming everything fills up and panicking into early reservations. Outside of July and August, Gjirokaster sees genuinely low crowds. You can often walk up and negotiate a room in shoulder season, and you will sometimes get a better deal than anything listed online. In peak summer, book one to two weeks ahead at most. That is all the lead time this city requires.
