The coastline is genuinely stunning. This is the real draw, and it delivers. The beaches around Al Hoceima National Park are some of the cleanest and least developed on the entire Mediterranean. Cala Iris, Tala Youssef, Issane – you can find yourself on soft sand with crystal-clear water and almost nobody around, which in peak Mediterranean summer feels borderline miraculous. The water is excellent for snorkelling and diving, visibility is good, and the underwater landscape around the rocky coves is properly beautiful.
The Penon de Alhucemas sitting offshore is a genuinely strange and photogenic sight – a tiny Spanish territory you can see but not visit, which adds a peculiar historical intrigue to the view. Worth a few photographs and a moment of puzzled reflection about colonial geography.
The Rif Berber character of the town itself is authentic and unhurried. The market has real local life rather than tourist performance, and the food – particularly fresh fish – is cheap and genuinely good. Eat where fishermen eat and you’ll spend almost nothing.
Now for the honest part.
Getting here is an effort. The roads through the Rif Mountains are winding and slow. The nearest useful airport has limited connections. If you’re coming from Fez or Chefchaouen overland, budget serious time and tolerance for the journey. Some people find the town itself underwhelming between beach trips – infrastructure is patchy, tourist facilities are minimal, and things close when they close.
The national park access can be logistically awkward without your own transport. Hiring something locally solves this but requires some negotiation. This is not a destination that makes things easy for you, and honestly that’s partly why it remains unspoilt.
There are also moments – particularly if you’re a solo woman – where the attention from groups of local men can tip from friendly curiosity into genuinely wearing territory.
**Verdict:** Yes, worth visiting, but only if the beaches and seclusion are specifically what you came for. Al Hoceima is not a polished destination – it’s a real Moroccan town with extraordinary natural surroundings attached. Come with flexible expectations, your own transport if possible, and genuine enthusiasm for doing very little beautifully. That combination makes it excellent value and quietly memorable.
