Al Hoceima in January is about as far from the summer beach scene as you can get, and honestly, that’s either a problem or a feature depending on what you’re after.

The weather sits in that awkward Mediterranean winter zone – mild enough that you won’t freeze, but genuinely unpredictable. Temperatures hover around 12-16°C during the day, occasionally warmer if you catch a sunny spell, but the wind off the sea can make it feel significantly colder than the numbers suggest. Rainfall is genuinely hard to pin down. Some January weeks are crisp and beautiful, others bring grey stretches of drizzle that make the coastal scenery look brooding rather than spectacular. You cannot count on sunshine. Pack layers and a waterproof and adjust your expectations accordingly.

The crowds have essentially evaporated. The beaches that get absolutely mobbed by Moroccan families and European tourists in July and August are yours almost entirely. The town centre feels like a real working place rather than a resort, which gives you a much more honest sense of how people actually live here. That’s genuinely appealing if you find peak summer tourism exhausting.

What’s open is more of a mixed picture. Most restaurants and cafes serving locals stay operational, so you won’t starve. But some accommodation options, beach-facing places especially, either close completely or run on skeleton staff. Don’t assume your first-choice riad or guesthouse will be operating – check directly before booking anything.

The national park and the surrounding Rif mountain landscapes are actually worth exploring in winter if the weather cooperates. The light can be extraordinary, the hiking trails are uncrowded, and the dramatic coastline hits differently without beach umbrellas everywhere.

Is it worth going? If you want beaches and swimming, no, wait. If you want somewhere quiet, relatively affordable, and genuinely off the tourist radar where you can explore at your own pace, yes, it works.

**Practical tip:** Hire a car. January bus frequency drops and having your own transport means you’re not stranded when something unexpectedly closes.
