Saint-Tropez, France: Complete Travel Guide

Saint-Tropez operates on its own terms, and the sooner you accept that, the better your trip will be. Yes, it’s expensive, occasionally insufferable, and packed with people who want to be seen rather than actually experience anything. Go anyway, because underneath the superyacht circus there’s a genuinely beautiful Provençal fishing village that earned its reputation honestly. Brigitte Bardot put this place on the map in the 1950s, and the bones of what she loved — the terracotta rooftops, the turquoise water, the unhurried café culture around the old port — are still very much there if you know where to look.

What it’s actually like: loud, golden, and aggressively glamorous from July through August. Skip those months entirely. May, June, and September give you the same light, the same rosé, the same extraordinary beach without the gridlock traffic that can trap you in your car for three hours on a road that should take fifteen minutes. The port area is genuinely lovely in the morning before the crowds arrive — fishing boats still dock alongside the superyachts, which creates a surreal and somehow charming contrast. The weekly market at Place des Lices is one of the best in Provence and completely free of pretension.

Pampelonne Beach is where most visitors spend their days, anchored to a sun lounger at Club 55 or Nikki Beach, drinking rosé that costs roughly what a flight home should cost. This is absolutely worth doing once, because the beach itself is spectacular — three kilometres of fine sand curving into genuinely clear water. But you don’t have to pay club prices. Walk past the clubs to the free sections and bring your own picnic from the market.

The old town, La Ponche quarter specifically, is what most tourists miss entirely. Narrow painted streets, a 16th-century citadel with views that will stop you mid-sentence, and restaurants where locals actually eat. Spend a morning there before the day-trippers arrive and Saint-Tropez suddenly makes complete sense.

This place suits people who enjoy beauty with a side of spectacle — those comfortable spending money without apologising for it, or resourceful enough to enjoy the scenery without opening their wallet every five minutes. It does not suit anyone requiring peace, budget accommodation, or a quiet beach in high season. Choose your timing wisely and it rewards you generously.
