Visiting Chefchaouen in January
# Chefchaouen in January: The Blue City in Winter
January is genuinely one of the more interesting times to visit Chefchaouen, though not necessarily for the reasons you might expect.
The weather is legitimately unpredictable. The town sits in the Rif Mountains at around 600 metres, which means January can swing between crisp sunny days that feel almost Mediterranean and cold, grey stretches with proper rain and fog rolling through the valleys. Pack layers you actually mean it. Temperatures can drop to single digits at night, and the narrow medina streets stay damp and shadowy even when the sun comes out. The blue walls look genuinely beautiful against a moody winter sky, but you might also spend an afternoon huddled in a café waiting for a downpour to pass.
On the crowd question, January is about as quiet as Chefchaouen gets. The Instagram hordes thin out considerably, which changes the place in ways that matter. You can actually walk the Uta el-Hammam square without negotiating a traffic jam of tripods. Locals are more present and less performing for tourists. Shopkeepers will talk to you properly rather than at you. The medina feels like somewhere people actually live, which in peak season it barely does.
Most things stay open, including guesthouses, restaurants, and the majority of shops, though hours can be erratic and some smaller places close if footfall is low. The Kasbah museum and the main hammam operate year-round. Hiking up to the Spanish mosque is still worthwhile and the views, weather permitting, are genuinely worth the climb.
Is it worth going? If you want atmosphere over sunshine and you’re comfortable with the possibility of a few grey days, absolutely yes. It suits photographers, slower travellers, and anyone who finds the summer version of Chefchaouen a bit exhausting. Families with young children or people wanting reliable warmth should probably wait.
**Practical tip:** Book accommodation with heating explicitly mentioned. Riads can be beautiful and absolutely freezing, and not all of them are set up for winter stays. Ask directly before you commit.
