**The genuine highlights first.** The Bibliotheca Alexandrina is legitimately impressive – a striking modern building that actually delivers inside with thoughtful exhibitions and a library space that makes you feel the weight of what once stood nearby. Qaitbay Citadel is the real deal, sitting dramatically over the Mediterranean where the ancient lighthouse once stood. The sea views alone justify the entrance fee. The Corniche promenade at dusk, with locals eating corn and couples watching the water, has an authentic Mediterranean rhythm that feels genuinely lived-in rather than performed for tourists.
Montazah Palace gardens are lovely for a slow afternoon wander, peaceful and green in a way Alexandria’s busy streets aren’t.
**Now the honest part.** The Greco-Roman Museum has been “under renovation” for years, with only a fraction of its collection accessible. It’s frustrating when you’ve specifically traveled for it. The Corniche itself, while atmospheric, is also traffic-choked and occasionally grimy. Alexandria wears its decay quite openly – there’s faded grandeur everywhere, colonial-era buildings crumbling elegantly, and a persistent sense that the city is running slightly behind its own ambitions. If you’re already in Egypt and can add two or three days, absolutely do it – the combination of history, Mediterranean atmosphere, and authentic Egyptian city life is genuinely distinctive. If you’re flying specifically for the Greco-Roman antiquities experience, wait until the museum situation improves.
