Where to Stay in Alexandria

Alexandria sits along the Mediterranean coast and offers a genuinely different experience from Cairo, with a more relaxed, European-influenced atmosphere that budget travelers tend to appreciate. The city is long and narrow, stretched along the seafront, so where you base yourself matters more than people realize.

The area around Raml Station and the Corniche is the sweet spot for budget travelers. This central district puts you within walking distance of the main tram lines, street food vendors, the famous Cecil Hotel area, and the waterfront without paying waterfront prices. Small guesthouses and mid-range hotels cluster around Saad Zaghloul Square, and competition keeps rates reasonable. You get the buzz of a working Egyptian city without feeling isolated or trapped in a tourist bubble. Expect to pay somewhere between $15 and $35 per night for a clean, decent room here.

Mahtet Masr, the area near the main railway station, is worth considering if you arrive late or leave early, but the neighborhood lacks charm and some streets feel a bit gritty after dark. It is functional rather than enjoyable. Agami and Montazah on the eastern and western edges of the city are popular with Egyptian vacationers in summer, but budget options thin out considerably and you will spend more on transportation.

Avoid booking anything that describes itself as being directly on the Corniche without reading reviews carefully. The road noise from the coastal highway is brutal, and overpriced rooms with sea views often deliver nothing but headaches and exhaust fumes through single-pane windows.

The classic booking mistake people make in Alexandria is confusing the city’s neighborhoods using Cairo logic. Alexandria’s street naming and Google Maps accuracy can be inconsistent, so a hotel listed near a landmark might actually be twenty minutes away by tram. Always check the exact address against the tram stop, not just the neighborhood name.

For the tightest budgets, hostels near Raml Station occasionally appear on booking platforms but sell out fast during summer. Book at least two weeks ahead between June and August when Egyptian families flood the city and budget rooms essentially disappear.
