Visiting Mostar in April

# Mostar in April: Worth It, With Caveats

April in Mostar sits in that slightly awkward shoulder season where the city is waking up but hasn’t fully decided it’s summer yet. Temperatures are genuinely pleasant most days, hovering somewhere between 15 and 20 degrees, but you’ll want a jacket because it can drop sharply in the evenings and rain arrives without much warning. April is one of the wetter months here. Not constant downpour territory, but you’ll likely have a few grey, drizzly days mixed in with the sunshine. Pack accordingly and don’t build an itinerary that falls apart the moment clouds appear.

The crowds situation is honestly one of the best reasons to visit in April. Mostar in July and August is genuinely unpleasant in that regard – the Old Bridge area becomes almost impossible to appreciate because it’s shoulder-to-shoulder tourists all pointing cameras at the same spot. In April you can actually stand on Stari Most and look at it rather than another person’s head. The city feels like a place people live in rather than a stage set, which matters here because Mostar has a complex, heavy history that gets flattened when the tourist circus is fully operational.

Most restaurants, cafes, and tour operators are open by April, though you might find some smaller guesthouses and outlying attractions still shaking off winter. The main sites – the bridge, KujundÅžiluk bazaar street, the mosques, Crooked Bridge – are all accessible. Some of the day trip options like Kravice Waterfalls are particularly beautiful in spring with the water running high.

Is it worth it? For independent travellers who actually want to absorb a place, yes, strongly. For someone wanting guaranteed warm evenings sipping drinks on a terrace every night, maybe wait until late May.

**Practical tip:** Book accommodation on the eastern side of the river if you can. You’ll be closer to the old town, you’ll hear the call to prayer in the morning, and the whole experience feels considerably more authentic than the hotel strips further out.
