Visiting Trebinje in June
# Trebinje in June: What It’s Actually Like
June is honestly one of the better times to show up in Trebinje, and not enough people know it.
The weather sits in that sweet spot before the Herzegovinian summer turns genuinely brutal. Expect temperatures somewhere in the mid-to-upper 20s Celsius most days, occasionally nudging 30. It’s warm, it’s sunny, and it feels Mediterranean in a way that surprises most visitors who arrive expecting something grimly Balkan. There is some rainfall possible early in the month, but June is generally drier than spring, and showers tend to be short when they happen. By late June you’re firmly into proper summer territory.
Crowds are light to moderate. Trebinje never really gets *busy* in the way that Dubrovnik, just 30 kilometres away, becomes completely unhinged. June sees some increase in visitors, particularly weekenders from Sarajevo and a trickle of tourists who’ve fled the Croatian coast price tags, but the old town platanes still have empty café tables underneath them most mornings. You can actually enjoy Stari Grad without shouldering through anyone.
Everything is open. Restaurants, wineries, the riverside walks, the market. The local wine scene is worth your proper attention here – Vranac from this region is genuinely good and embarrassingly cheap. Arslanagića Bridge, Tvrdoš Monastery, the hilltop church – all accessible, all quiet.
Is it worth it in June? For independent travellers who want warmth without madness, absolutely yes. For anyone who’s already booked Dubrovnik and fancies an easy day trip that feels completely different and untouched – also yes. It’s probably not the month for serious hikers who want cooler mountain temperatures, and beach people should probably continue to the coast.
**Practical tip:** Bring cash. Trebinje functions predominantly on cash, card machines exist but they’re unreliable and some smaller places don’t bother. There’s an ATM but getting caught short on a Sunday afternoon when you’re trying to order a third carafe of wine is an avoidable problem.
Go. It’s genuinely underrated.
