**The weather is a mixed bag.** Early May can still feel decidedly un-Greek. You might get glorious warm sunshine in the low-to-mid 20s, perfect for exploring, or you might get grey skies, wind, and rain that makes the whole trip feel a bit pointless. The Aegean is unpredictable in spring, and Ios is exposed enough to feel every bit of it. Pack layers and manage your expectations around beach time specifically. By late May it starts feeling reliably warmer, but it’s still not guaranteed.

**The crowds are the real story.** Ios in summer is infamous. It attracts a young, party-hard crowd and gets absolutely rammed in July and August. In May, that crowd simply hasn’t arrived yet. You’ll have Mylopotas beach largely to yourself, you can actually look at Chora without being shoulder-to-shoulder with strangers, and you won’t be queuing anywhere. It feels like a different island, frankly.

**What’s open is a legitimate question.** Some beach bars and restaurants will still be shuttered or running on skeleton hours in early May. By mid-to-late May, more things are waking up. You won’t have the full summer offer, but enough is open that you won’t feel like you’ve arrived before the island is ready. The main village has year-round staples running.

**Is it worth it and for whom?** Absolutely yes, if you’re not 22 and hunting for the notorious Ios nightlife scene. Couples, anyone who wants Greek island beauty without the chaos, hikers interested in the countryside, people visiting Homer’s supposed tomb – May is your month. If you want the full beach club experience and non-stop bars, you’ve come too early.

**One practical tip:** Book accommodation anyway. May is growing in popularity and the island has limited beds. Don’t assume off-season means availability.
