# Ajaccio in May: What It’s Actually Like
May is probably the sweet spot for Ajaccio, and most people who’ve been will tell you the same thing. The summer circus hasn’t arrived yet, prices are still reasonable, and the town actually belongs to locals for a few more weeks before the cruise ships start disgorging thousands of people onto the waterfront every morning.
That 20 degrees figure is honest. It’s genuinely pleasant rather than scorching, which means you can walk around the old town, climb up to the citadel area, and wander the market without feeling like you’re being slowly cooked. Evenings require a light jacket, especially if you’re sitting outside near the port. Don’t let anyone convince you otherwise.
The rain is real but not dramatic. Nearly 70mm across the month sounds worse than it is in practice. You’re typically looking at short, sharp showers rather than grey drizzle that ruins entire days. The maquis on the hills behind the city smells extraordinary after rain, that wild mix of rosemary and lavender and something you can’t quite name, so the weather occasionally works in your favour.
Practically everything is open in May. Restaurants are running proper menus rather than tourist shortcuts, the Napoleon museum is accessible without queuing, and beach clubs are setting up without being fully operational. The beaches exist but the water is around 17 or 18 degrees, so swimming depends entirely on your personal threshold for mild suffering.
Crowds are light by Corsican summer standards, though weekends can feel busier as French mainland visitors start arriving for long weekends. You’ll have space to actually look at things.
Who should go in May? Anyone who wants the atmosphere of a proper Corsican city without the August madness. Couples, older travellers, people who actually want to eat dinner at a normal pace.
Who might find it underwhelming? Sun worshippers expecting Mediterranean beach weather. It’s lovely, not tropical.
**Practical tip:** Book accommodation anyway. May is smaller than August but good places still fill up, particularly around the Napoleon birthday celebrations on the 15th.
