# Rethymno in June: What It’s Actually Like

June is genuinely one of the better times to visit Rethymno, and I’ll tell you why without overselling it.

The weather is warm and getting warmer. Early June sits comfortably in the mid-to-high twenties Celsius most days, and by the last week you’re regularly hitting thirty or beyond. Rain is pretty unlikely – Crete has essentially shrugged off winter by now – but it’s not the suffocating, inescapable heat of August. You can still walk around the old town at midday without genuinely regretting your life choices. That changes in July. June is the sweet spot before it tips over into brutal.

Crowds are building but haven’t peaked. The old Venetian harbour, the lighthouse, the narrow streets around the Rimondi Fountain – these are busy, especially on weekends, but you’re not fighting through solid walls of people. You can actually stop, look at something, and enjoy it. Restaurants have space most evenings without booking days ahead. Beach umbrellas are available. It feels like a functioning town that also has tourists in it, rather than a tourist machine that happens to have a few locals hiding somewhere.

Everything is open. This matters more than people realise. Museums, boat trips, the fortress, rental shops – June is fully operational in a way that April or early May sometimes isn’t. The beach bars are running, the tavernas are staffed properly, and the evening *volta* along the waterfront is genuinely lively.

**Who should come in June?** Couples, solo travellers, anyone who wants atmosphere without chaos, and families with school-age kids who can travel before the summer holidays begin.

**Who might prefer different timing?** Budget travellers hunting rock-bottom prices – June isn’t peak, but it’s not shoulder season cheap either.

**One practical tip:** The old town streets are uneven Venetian cobblestones. Pack one pair of genuinely comfortable flat shoes. Your feet will be destroyed by day two otherwise, and no view is worth that.

Honestly, June earns a solid recommendation.
