# Marrakech in January: The Honest Version

January is genuinely one of the better times to visit Marrakech, and I’ll tell you why most people don’t realise that.

The weather sits somewhere between “pleasantly mild” and “actually quite cold.” Days often reach around 18-20°C, which sounds lovely until the sun drops, and then it falls sharply – sometimes close to freezing overnight. Bring a proper jacket. The medina’s narrow streets don’t hold heat, and the riads, beautiful as they are, can be surprisingly chilly inside. Rain is possible, not guaranteed, but January does see some of Morocco’s wetter days. It’s rarely relentless, more like moody and atmospheric. Pack layers and one waterproof.

The crowds are dramatically reduced compared to spring or autumn peak season. Jemaa el-Fna square still has life – it’s never truly dead – but you can actually walk through the souks without being shoulder to shoulder with tour groups. Negotiations feel less frantic. Shopkeepers are more relaxed. Some of that exhausting performance pressure just… eases. If you’ve avoided Marrakech because of the chaos reputation, January is genuinely your window.

Everything important stays open. The Majorelle Garden, the Bahia Palace, the tanneries, the food stalls. Some smaller guesthouses or restaurants close briefly around the new year, but the city doesn’t shut down the way European seaside towns do. It functions normally.

Is it worth going? For independent travellers who hate crowds, absolutely yes. For people wanting guaranteed warm evenings sitting outside with a mint tea, less so. Families with young children who need reliable warmth might find it slightly uncomfortable. Photographers and anyone wanting to actually absorb the medina’s texture rather than survive it – January is quietly wonderful for that.

**One practical tip:** Book a riad with heated rooms, not just one that looks gorgeous on Instagram. Seriously ask before booking. Some stunning riads have zero heating and your beautiful traditional experience will involve sleeping in your coat. Check reviews specifically mentioning winter comfort. Cold nights are real.
