# Pula in October: The Honest Version
October is genuinely one of the better times to visit Pula, but not for the reasons a travel brochure would tell you.
The crowds have largely evaporated. The German and Austrian families who descend on Istria every August have gone home, and you can actually stand inside the Roman amphitheatre without someone’s selfie stick in your peripheral vision. That arena, which is around 2,000 years old and still absurdly well-preserved, hits differently when you’re not shuffling through it like cattle. You can stop. Look up. Actually think about what you’re standing inside.
At 15.5°C, the weather is mild rather than warm. Bring a proper jacket for evenings because once the sun drops, the sea breeze off the Adriatic gets sharp quickly. You’ll probably get a few genuinely beautiful sunny days mixed in with some grey, drizzly ones – that 45mm of rainfall across the month means rain is a real presence, not just a theoretical risk. Pack layers and accept that one afternoon might involve sitting in a konoba eating pasta with truffles while it pours outside, which is honestly not a terrible afternoon.
Most restaurants and bars are still open, though some beach-facing spots start closing mid-month. The old town is fully functional. Markets are quieter and better for it.
Is it worth it? Depends who you are. If you want a beach holiday with guaranteed sunshine and warm swimming, you’ve left it too late – the Adriatic is around 18°C, swimmable for some people but not exactly inviting. If you want to explore Roman ruins, eat well, walk the coastal paths without sweating through your shirt, and feel like the town belongs to actual humans again, then yes, absolutely.
**One practical tip:** Book accommodation anyway. October still draws enough visitors that the good small guesthouses in the old town fill up, especially on weekends. Don’t assume off-season means you can just turn up and figure it out.
