Byblos is genuinely one of those places where the history alone justifies the journey. This is a city that has been continuously inhabited for something like 7,000 years, and standing in the archaeological site watching Phoenician, Roman and Crusader ruins essentially pile on top of each other is the kind of experience that makes you feel appropriately small and humbled. The Crusader castle sitting right by the harbour is legitimately beautiful, particularly in late afternoon light when the old stone goes golden. That image alone has been living rent-free in my head since I visited.
The old souk district is charming without being completely sanitised, which is rarer than it should be. There are antique dealers, cafes, and old family-run shops sitting alongside places clearly aimed at tourists, but the balance still feels human. Walk the narrow streets without a particular agenda and you’ll enjoy yourself.
The beach clubs below the old city are popular with Beirutis on weekends and have a genuinely relaxed Mediterranean atmosphere. They’re not glamorous, but they’re enjoyable and cheap, and combining a morning of ruins with an afternoon in the water is a completely reasonable way to spend a day.
Now for the honest part. The archaeological site is impressive in concept but can feel a little underwhelming in presentation. Signage is patchy, context is limited, and without a guide or serious background reading you might find yourself walking around slightly confused about what you’re actually looking at. The ruins deserve better curation than they currently get. It’s also worth acknowledging the wider context: Lebanon has been through enormous economic and political turbulence, and while that makes it extremely budget-friendly right now, some infrastructure and services reflect that strain. Things can feel a little ragged around the edges.
Byblos also works best as a day trip from Beirut rather than a multi-day destination. There’s a strong half-day to full-day here, but by evening you’ll likely have seen what there is to see.
**Verdict: Yes, go.** If you’re already in Lebanon, Byblos is an easy, rewarding trip that punches well above its tourist footprint. The history is real, the setting is beautiful, and the crowds are low. Manage your expectations around presentation and you’ll leave genuinely glad you made the effort.
