# Byblos in January: What It’s Actually Like

Look, January in Byblos is genuinely unpredictable, and anyone telling you otherwise is guessing. Lebanon’s Mediterranean coast means you could land in crisp, pleasant sunshine around 12-15°C, or you could spend three days watching rain hammer the harbour. Both are entirely plausible. Pack layers and something waterproof regardless of what any forecast tells you the week before.

Here’s what that uncertainty actually means on the ground. The ancient ruins and the crusader castle don’t disappear in the rain, but wandering Phoenician archaeological sites in a downpour is a different experience than most people picture when they book flights. The old souk area, with its narrow stone streets, can feel atmospheric and moody in grey weather, or it can just feel wet. Temper expectations accordingly.

The genuine upside of January is that you’ll mostly have the place to yourself. Byblos is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities on earth, which sounds like a tourism brochure line until you’re actually standing at the ruins without a tour group blocking your view. In summer and around holidays, the harbour restaurants fill up and the old city gets genuinely crowded. In January, locals reclaim the town and the pace slows right down. That’s actually quite special.

Most of the core sites stay open year-round, including the archaeological park. Some restaurants along the harbour may keep reduced hours or close on weekdays if business is slow, so don’t arrive Monday evening expecting full choice. The Christmas and New Year period sees more activity, but by mid-January things have quieted considerably.

Worth visiting in January? If you’re interested in history, archaeology, or just wandering somewhere genuinely ancient without feeling processed by tourism infrastructure, yes. If you’re expecting a buzzy coastal scene with warm evenings eating outside, wrong season entirely.

**Practical tip:** Bring cash in USD or Lebanese pounds. The economic situation in Lebanon remains complicated, card payment reliability is inconsistent, and having cash removes one layer of potential frustration from your trip.
