# Aqaba, Jordan: Worth the Trip?
Let me be straight with you. Aqaba is genuinely interesting, but it’s also a city that gets oversold in certain corners of the internet, and you deserve an honest picture before you book.
**What Actually Works**
The Red Sea diving and snorkelling here is legitimately excellent. The coral reefs are healthy, visibility is exceptional, and the water temperature is comfortable for most of the year. If you’re a diver, this alone justifies the visit. Even casual snorkellers can wade in from shore and immediately see something worthwhile. That’s relatively rare in the world and genuinely special.
The duty-free status means alcohol is cheaper here than anywhere else in Jordan, which matters if you’re spending several weeks in the country and have been paying Amman restaurant prices.
As a base for Wadi Rum day trips, Aqaba works perfectly. The desert is close, logistics are straightforward, and you can be watching a sunrise over red sand dunes and back for dinner the same day.
**Where It Disappoints**
The city itself is scrappy and underwhelming compared to what the brochures suggest. The waterfront promenade feels half-finished, the beach situation for independent travellers is genuinely frustrating because most decent stretches are swallowed by resort hotels, and the town centre is functional rather than charming. You won’t wander romantic old streets finding hidden gems. It doesn’t really have that atmosphere.
Petra is frequently marketed as an Aqaba day trip. Technically possible, but honestly brutal. It’s two hours each way, and Petra demands your energy. You’ll shortchange yourself if you’re rushing back for dinner. Stay closer to Petra if that’s your priority.
The heat between June and August is punishing in a way that genuinely limits what you can do and enjoy.
**The Honest Verdict**
Aqaba earns its place on a Jordan itinerary, but mainly as a functional stop rather than a destination in its own right. Come here for the underwater world, use it as your Wadi Rum launchpad, and appreciate the cold beer. Give it two or three nights.
If you’re hoping for a buzzing coastal city with great food, a beautiful old town, and beach access for everyone, adjust your expectations considerably.
Worth visiting? Yes. Worth building a whole trip around? Probably not.
