Ölüdeniz, the famous Blue Lagoon about 15 kilometres away, is genuinely beautiful and genuinely exhausting. The photos are accurate. The parasailers overhead are constant. The beach gets packed by 10am in summer, and the approach road becomes a slow carnival of transfers and minibuses. Go early, accept the chaos, and it delivers. Treat it like a hidden gem and you’ll be disappointed.
The gulet cruise starting point aspect is Fethiye’s strongest card. If you’re doing a Blue Voyage along the Turkish coast, starting here makes complete logistical sense and the town has the infrastructure to support it comfortably.
The town itself is pleasant without being remarkable. The market is worth a wander, the waterfront has decent restaurants, and it’s more functional than touristy in the backstreets. Accommodation sits comfortably in the mid-range without drama.
The honest disappointment is that Fethiye suffers from its own popularity. Peak summer turns certain areas into a package-holiday conveyor belt, and if you’re hoping for authentic slowness, you’ll need to work slightly harder to find it.
**Verdict: Yes, visit – but time it well.** May, early June, or September gives you most of what makes Fethiye worthwhile without the worst of the crowds. It’s a solid base with genuine surrounding highlights. Just stop expecting it to be undiscovered, because it absolutely isn’t.
