Visiting Petra in February
# Petra in February: What You’re Actually Getting Into
February sits in Petra’s winter, and winter here means something most travel sites gloss over. The weather is genuinely unpredictable. You can get crisp, brilliantly clear days where the pink sandstone looks almost unreal in the low winter light. You can also get grey skies, cold winds funneling through the Siq, and rain that turns the pathways into rivers. Flash flooding is a real concern in the Wadi Musa area during winter months, and the site occasionally closes with very little warning when conditions turn dangerous. Not to scare you off, just to say pack accordingly and stay flexible.
What February does deliver is crowds you won’t see any other way. The site is noticeably quieter than spring or autumn, which honestly transforms the experience. You can stand in front of the Treasury and actually take it in rather than photographing the back of someone’s head. The Monastery, that brutal uphill climb, feels more like a personal achievement and less like a theme park queue. If solitude around ancient monuments matters to you, this is one of the better windows you’ll get.
Most of the main site is open, including Petra By Night, though check closer to your visit since winter scheduling occasionally shifts. The visitor center operates normally and the main trail is accessible on the majority of days.
Is it worth it? For photographers and people who genuinely want to feel the scale of the place without fighting the crowds, absolutely yes. For families with young children or anyone who struggles with cold and damp, maybe wait until April. The temperature can drop sharply once the sun goes behind the ridges, and evenings in Wadi Musa get properly cold.
**Practical tip:** Bring layers you can actually strip down and add back quickly. You’ll start the Siq in a jacket, overheat climbing to the High Place of Sacrifice, and want that jacket again by 3pm. Most people underestimate how much the temperature swings within a single day.
