Visiting Rome in July

# Rome in July: What You’re Actually Getting Into

Let’s be straight with you: July in Rome is hot. Not “oh how charming, gelato weather” hot. We’re talking 32-36°C (90-97°F) on a normal day, with humidity that makes it feel like you’re breathing through a warm flannel. The sun hits the cobblestones and bounces straight back up at you. By 2pm, the city feels like a beautiful, ancient oven.

Rainfall is low but not impossible. You might get a sudden dramatic thunderstorm that clears the air for about forty minutes before the humidity returns with a vengeance. Don’t bank on rain saving you.

**The crowds are real.** July is peak tourist season, full stop. The Colosseum, the Vatican, the Trevi Fountain — you will share these with thousands of people every single day. Lines are long even with pre-booked tickets. The Trevi Fountain at 9am already has people three deep. This isn’t a reason to skip Rome, but go in with accurate expectations rather than a fantasy of having the pantheon to yourself.

Most things are open, which is a genuine plus. Restaurants, museums, shops — Rome in July is very much operational. Some smaller, locally-owned places do close for a week or two as Romans themselves escape the heat, so you might find your perfect neighbourhood trattoria shuttered.

**Is it worth it?** Honestly, it depends on you. If you handle heat badly, July will grind you down. If you have young children or elderly parents, the logistics get genuinely hard. But if you have flexibility, love long evenings (it stays light until nearly 9pm, and outdoor dining is magnificent), and can pace yourself, Rome in July has a particular magic. The nights are warm, the aperitivo culture is in full swing, and the city stays alive late.

**One practical tip:** Structure your days backwards. Do your sightseeing before 10am or after 5pm. Surrender the midday hours completely — find shade, eat slowly, drink water aggressively. The Romans invented the afternoon break for a reason.
