Visiting Florence in July
# Florence in July: Beautiful, Brutal, Worth It?
Let’s be straight with you: July in Florence is hot. Not “oh how delightful, a warm European summer” hot. We’re talking 35°C plus, thick air that hits you like opening an oven door, and streets that radiate heat back up through your sandals. Rainfall is genuinely unpredictable – you might get nothing for three weeks, or a brief violent thunderstorm that clears as fast as it arrived and leaves everything steaming. Pack accordingly, but don’t bank on rain to save you.
The crowds are real and they are relentless. The Uffizi, the Accademia, the Duomo – these places are genuinely packed. You’ll queue in direct sun alongside several thousand other people who also thought this summer would be a good time to find themselves through Renaissance art. Book everything in advance. Not “probably should” advance. Book it before you book your flights.
What’s open? Almost everything, which is genuinely in Florence’s favour compared to some Italian cities that quietly shut down in August. Restaurants, shops, museums – the city stays functioning. Some smaller family-run places take breaks in late July, but you won’t struggle to find food or culture.
So is it worth it? For the right person, absolutely yes. If you’re flexible with your hours – out early, resting midday, reviving late afternoon – Florence in July rewards you. The evening light on the Ponte Vecchio is extraordinary. Dinner at 9pm when the air finally softens feels genuinely magical. Gelato becomes less of a treat and more of a survival mechanism, which is its own kind of joy.
If you’re travelling with young children, have health conditions affected by heat, or simply hate being uncomfortable, honestly consider May, September, or October instead. Florence will still be stunning then, with half the people and twice the pleasure.
**One practical tip:** Buy a portable fan. Not as a joke. A small handheld fan costs almost nothing and transforms your time standing in queues from miserable to merely warm.
