# Ikaria in June: Honest Thoughts
June is genuinely one of the better times to visit Ikaria, and I say that as someone who’s also been there in August and survived to tell the tale.
The weather sits around 28°C, which sounds perfect on paper and mostly is in practice. It’s warm enough to swim comfortably – the Aegean has heated up enough by then that you’re not doing that embarrassing ankle-deep shuffle – but you’re not yet melting into the pavement by 2pm. The 10mm of rainfall means you might catch one brief dramatic shower, possibly accompanied by thunder rolling around the mountains, which honestly adds atmosphere rather than ruining anything. Pack a light layer for evenings regardless. The hills cool down fast after sunset.
Crowds are still manageable in early June. The island hasn’t hit its full summer intensity yet, which matters more on Ikaria than most places because this isn’t somewhere built for mass tourism. The famous all-night panigiri festivals are starting to ramp up toward the end of the month, so you might catch one if your timing is lucky. Ask locals. They’ll know.
Most tavernas, cafes and accommodation are open by June, though some of the more remote spots run on Ikarian time, meaning they open when the owner feels like it. Don’t arrive with a rigid itinerary. The beaches at Nas and Seychelles are accessible and not yet sardined with sunbeds. You can actually find a rock to sit on.
Is it worth visiting in June? Yes, particularly if you’re someone who hates crowds, loves hiking, or wants to actually talk to people who live there rather than queue behind thirty other tourists for the same photo. It suits independent travellers, couples, anyone who appreciates slow mornings and long lunches.
It’s less ideal if you’re coming specifically for the wild festival nightlife culture – that really peaks in July and August.
**Practical tip:** Rent a car before you arrive. Seriously, book it from home. June availability disappears faster than you’d expect, and without wheels, you’re stranded in ways that stop being charming after day two.
