Visiting Gran Canaria in April

# Gran Canaria in April: What You’re Actually Getting Into

April in Gran Canaria sits in that slightly awkward in-between space. The big Easter rush has usually just cleared out, the summer hordes haven’t arrived yet, and the island is doing its own thing for a few weeks. That’s either ideal or underwhelming depending on what you’re after.

**The weather is genuinely unpredictable.** The south around Maspalomas will almost certainly be warmer and sunnier than anywhere else on the island – that’s just geography, not marketing. You’re probably looking at mid-20s Celsius on good days. But April can throw overcast mornings that hang around longer than you’d like, and the north and interior get noticeably cooler and cloudier. Don’t book assuming wall-to-wall sunshine, because you might not get it. Pack a layer.

Rainfall is possible but rarely heavy or prolonged in the south. The mountains are a different story.

**Crowds are manageable.** Post-Easter, the island breathes a bit. You’ll still find plenty of people in Playa del Inglés and the main resort strips – it never truly empties – but you won’t be queuing aggressively for sunbeds or fighting for restaurant tables. The Canarian locals get their island back slightly, which makes it feel more authentic.

Most things are fully open. Restaurants, water parks, boat trips, the dunes at Maspalomas – all running normally. This isn’t shoulder season in the struggling sense.

**Is it worth going?** For beach-obsessed sunseekers who need guaranteed scorching heat, honestly, maybe wait until June. But if you want decent warmth, lower prices than peak summer, and actually being able to walk around without feeling processed through a tourist machine, April works really well. It’s particularly good for hikers and people wanting to explore the interior properly – temperatures are comfortable rather than brutal.

**Practical tip:** Book accommodation in the south if weather consistency matters to you. The microclimate difference between Las Palmas in the north and Maspalomas in the south in April is significant enough to genuinely affect your trip.
