# Lagos in May: What It’s Actually Like
May sits in that sweet spot before the summer circus arrives, and honestly, it’s one of the better times to visit Lagos if you’re willing to gamble slightly on the weather.
The temperature hovers around 24°C, which feels genuinely pleasant rather than the skin-melting intensity you’ll get in July and August. You can actually walk around the old town, climb up to the fortress, wander the market without sweating through your clothes before 10am. That alone makes it worthwhile for a lot of people.
The 20mm of rainfall sounds alarming but it isn’t, really. You’re talking about occasional afternoon showers, sometimes a grey morning, nothing that ruins a trip if you’re flexible. Pack a light layer for evenings because the Atlantic breeze has some bite once the sun drops.
Crowds are building but haven’t peaked yet. The beaches – Meia Praia, Praia Dona Ana – are accessible without the shoulder-to-shoulder chaos of peak summer. You can get a sunbed without arriving at dawn like it’s a German resort. Restaurants are open and staffed properly, unlike the shoulder months of March and April when you might find your first choice shut on a Tuesday for no obvious reason.
**Who should go in May:** Couples, solo travellers, anyone who values a functional holiday over a perfect-weather holiday. Families with young kids who need guaranteed sunshine might want to push to June. Anyone who hates crowds should absolutely go in May rather than waiting.
**Who might be disappointed:** Beach obsessives who need eight consecutive hours of baking sun. It might not deliver that consistently.
Everything you want to do is open – boat trips to the grottos, the market, the restaurants worth queuing for. The sea is still cool though, around 18-19°C, so committed swimmers should manage expectations.
**One practical tip:** Book accommodation now but don’t book every dinner in advance. May gives you the rare luxury of being spontaneous in a town that swallows that option completely by late June.
Go. It’s genuinely good.
