# Sagres in May: What It’s Actually Like

May is genuinely one of the better times to visit Sagres, and I’ll tell you why without the usual promotional nonsense.

The weather sits around 24°C, which sounds perfect on paper and mostly is in practice. You’ll get warm, sunny days that are actually comfortable rather than punishing. The 20mm of rainfall means you might catch a grey morning or a brief shower, but nothing that should derail your trip. Pack a light layer anyway because the wind at Cabo de São Vicente is relentless regardless of the calendar. That cape earns its reputation as the windiest point in Europe almost daily, and standing on that cliff edge in a t-shirt while a gale tries to remove your face is a genuinely humbling experience.

Crowds are manageable in May. The summer surge hasn’t fully arrived yet, so you can actually stand at the fortress and look at the Atlantic without elbowing through tour groups. The town itself is small and slightly scruffy in the best way – a few restaurants, surf shops, not much else. It won’t feel overrun. Accommodation is available without booking six months ahead, and prices haven’t hit peak season territory yet.

Everything worth visiting is open. The fortress, the cape, the beaches. Praia do Beliche and Praia da Mareta are swimmable for the brave – the Atlantic here is cold, roughly 18°C, so manage your expectations. Surfers absolutely love Sagres in May and you’ll see plenty of them. If that’s your thing, conditions are excellent.

Is it worth it? If you want dramatic coastline, solitude, good hiking, and zero interest in nightlife or resort infrastructure, yes, completely. Sagres isn’t trying to impress you with restaurants or glamour. It’s rocks, ocean, and sky. If that combination bores you, skip it.

**Practical tip:** Drive to Cabo de São Vicente for sunset, then leave quickly. Parking disappears fast and the road back in the dark is narrow and unlit. Go earlier than you think you need to.
