# Cascais in October: The Honest Version
October is genuinely one of the better times to visit Cascais, and I say that as someone who’s also been in August and spent most of it sweating into an overpriced pastel de nata while fighting through tourist gridlock.
**What the weather actually feels like**
That 18.9°C average sounds modest on paper but translates to genuinely pleasant days, often warmer in sunshine, with evenings that finally have some bite to them. You’ll want a jacket after dinner. The 45mm of rainfall sounds alarming but it typically arrives in short, dramatic bursts rather than week-long grey misery. You might lose one afternoon to rain. Pack a light waterproof and stop worrying about it.
**The crowd situation**
This is the real reason to come in October. The town still functions properly — restaurants are open, boats are running, the promenade has life — but the summer chaos is genuinely gone. You can walk along the seafront without being shoulder-to-shoulder with strangers. Tables at good restaurants are bookable without three weeks notice. The locals have visibly relaxed back into their own town, which changes the atmosphere significantly.
**What’s open, what’s not**
Almost everything. The beaches are quiet but accessible if you’re brave enough for a swim (water temperature hangs around 19-20°C, so manageable). The Boca do Inferno cliffs, the Sintra day trip, the marina bars — all operating normally. Some water sports operators scale back, but the main experiences remain fully available.
**Is it worth it, and for whom**
Absolutely worth it if you’re a couple, a solo traveller, or anyone who genuinely wants to experience a place rather than survive it. Families with school-age kids probably can’t make October work, which is honestly part of why it’s so calm.
**One practical tip**
Book accommodation anyway. October has grown in popularity as the “secret” shoulder season, which means it’s no longer quite the secret it was. Prices are still noticeably lower than summer, but decent places do fill up.
