Visiting Ios in October

# Ios in October: The Party Island With the Lights Off

Here’s the thing about Ios in October — you’re essentially visiting a completely different island than the one that exists in July.

The crowds have almost entirely evaporated. The backpackers who made Chora’s bar street famous have long gone home, and you’ll find yourself walking through a village that’s genuinely, sometimes eerily, quiet. Maybe 20% of businesses are still operating. Some restaurants are open, a handful of accommodation options remain, but that famous nightlife infrastructure? Largely shuttered. If you came for the parties, you’ve missed them by about six weeks.

Weather-wise, October is genuinely unpredictable. Early October can still deliver warm sunny days in the low-to-mid twenties, the kind where you’ll absolutely swim and wonder why you ever worried. Then again, you might hit a week of grey skies and real autumn rain, particularly as the month progresses. The Aegean doesn’t follow a schedule, and nobody can honestly promise you sunshine. Pack layers and accept the gamble.

What you actually get is access to one of the most beautiful natural settings in the Cyclades without the human noise. Mylopotas beach, which in August resembles a festival ground, becomes genuinely stunning again — that turquoise water, the long sweep of sand, almost to yourself. You can explore the hilltop Chora properly, visit Homer’s alleged tomb without anyone else around, walk the old paths between villages in comfortable temperatures.

Is it worth it? For independent travellers who care more about landscape than scene, absolutely yes. For couples wanting somewhere beautiful and peaceful at a fraction of summer prices, genuinely lovely. For anyone expecting the Ios they’ve seen on Instagram, a real disappointment.

The island has a slightly melancholy end-of-season atmosphere that some people find romantic and others find depressing. Know which type you are before booking.

**Practical tip:** Call your accommodation directly before arriving and specifically ask which restaurants nearby are still open. Don’t assume — showing up to discover your only dinner option closed on Tuesdays is a very real October scenario.
