# Menton in October: The Honest Version
October is genuinely one of the better times to visit Menton, but probably not for the reasons the travel sites will tell you.
The crowds have largely evaporated by mid-October. The Italian day-trippers, the summer families, the people photographing their feet in front of the old town’s orange and yellow facades — most of them are gone. You can actually walk the Rue Longue without performing a slow shuffle. The market on weekdays has locals buying vegetables again rather than tourists buying lemon-shaped soap. It feels like a real town, which is a significant improvement.
At 16 degrees, the weather is genuinely pleasant rather than spectacular. Warm enough for lunch outside if you pick a sheltered spot and the sun’s out, but you’ll want a layer for evenings, which cool down quickly. The 45mm of rainfall sounds alarming but it typically arrives in heavy short bursts rather than grinding grey drizzle. You might lose a morning to rain and then have a gorgeous golden afternoon. Bring a compact umbrella and don’t stress about it.
The beach is absolutely swimmable for the first couple of weeks if you’re not precious about temperature. After that, it’s more of a walking destination than a swimming one. Most beach restaurants start pulling back hours or closing entirely from mid-month.
What stays open: the old town, the lemon gardens, the Cocteau museum, the market, plenty of restaurants. What gets patchy: beach clubs, some of the more seasonal places on the lungomare.
Who should come in October? Honestly, people who actually like places. Walkers, slow travellers, anyone wanting the French Riviera without the French Riviera prices and performance of August. It suits couples and solo travellers particularly well. Families with young children might find the beach situation slightly frustrating.
**One practical tip:** Book accommodation in the old town itself rather than along the seafront. The streets are quieter in October and you’ll want to be embedded in the neighbourhood rather than looking at it from a distance.
