# Santorini in June: What It’s Actually Like
June is when Santorini shifts gears from “busy” to “seriously busy,” and you should know that before you book anything.
The weather is genuinely excellent. You’re looking at around 29°C most days, almost no rain – that 10mm monthly average basically means one brief shower the entire month – and long evenings that stay warm enough for dinner outside without a jacket. The Aegean is properly swimmable by now, hovering around 23°C, which feels like a bath compared to most European beaches. Sunsets from Oia are doing their famous thing every single night, and the light throughout the day is extraordinary. Photographically, meteorologically, it’s hard to fault.
The honest problem is the people.
June sits in that awkward middle zone where it’s not quite peak July or August madness, but it’s close enough that you’ll feel it constantly. The caldera path between Fira and Oia gets genuinely unpleasant around midday. Sunset viewpoints in Oia require staking out a spot roughly an hour early if you want any breathing room. Restaurant reservations aren’t optional anymore – assume you need them everywhere worth eating. Prices are already at summer rates, which means eye-wateringly expensive for accommodation with a caldera view.
Everything is open, which matters. Boat tours, wineries, the archaeological site at Akrotiri, beach clubs at Perissa and Perivolos – June has the full menu available, unlike shoulder season where things operate sporadically.
**Is it worth it?** For couples prioritising atmosphere and complete infrastructure, yes. For families with young children who need flexibility and space, honestly consider May instead. Budget travellers will find June punishing.
**One practical tip:** Stay somewhere in Pyrgos or Megalochori rather than Oia or Fira. You’ll pay dramatically less, sleep without noise, and still reach the famous spots in fifteen minutes. The villages are genuinely beautiful and most tourists never bother exploring them. You get the island people actually live on rather than the theme park version, which ends up being the more memorable experience anyway.
