# Akko in July: Hot, Hectic, and Honestly Still Worth It

July in Akko is intense. The Mediterranean heat settles over the old city like a blanket you can’t kick off, and humidity rolls in off the water to make sure you really feel it. Temperatures regularly push into the low-to-mid 30s Celsius, and walking through the narrow stone alleyways of the Old City at midday feels genuinely punishing. Rainfall is essentially zero – this is peak dry season in northern Israel, so you won’t be dodging showers, but you will be hunting for shade.

Here’s the honest picture: July is Israeli summer holiday season, which means the city gets busy. Domestic tourists flood Akko on weekends, the port area gets loud and lively, and the fish restaurants along the waterfront fill up fast. Foreign tourist numbers are also high. The famous Khan Al-Umdan, the sea walls, the Crusader tunnels – you’ll be sharing all of it. The underground Crusader City and Templars’ Tunnel are genuinely popular for a reason in summer, because they’re cool and atmospheric, and queues reflect that. Book ahead or arrive right when they open.

Everything is open, which is the upside. Restaurants, the Turkish bathhouse, boat trips along the walls, the covered market – it’s all running. The market in particular buzzes with real local life, and the food scene in Akko is exceptional year-round. July doesn’t change that.

Is it worth visiting in July? For foodies and history obsessives, absolutely yes. The old city is extraordinary enough that sweating through it is still a net positive. For families with small children or anyone heat-sensitive, it’s genuinely rough, and you’d have a better time in spring or October. Budget travelers benefit from the fact that nearby Haifa hotels sometimes offer better July deals than the coast further south.

**Practical tip:** Start your day aggressively early, ideally before 8am. The old city at 7:30am, before the tour groups arrive and before the heat peaks, is a completely different and genuinely magical experience.
