# Alanya in January: What It’s Actually Like
Let’s be straight with you: January in Alanya is not beach weather. Thirteen degrees sounds almost reasonable until you’re standing on Cleopatra Beach with a stiff wind coming off the Mediterranean and you realise your sandals were a terrible idea. The sea is cold, the sky is frequently grey, and those 299mm of monthly rainfall have to fall somewhere. They fall here, often in dramatic sideways sheets that sweep through the old town and send the few remaining tourists scrambling under café awnings.
That said, there’s something genuinely lovely about Alanya in January if you approach it honestly.
The crowds are essentially gone. The carpet shops are empty, the boat tour touts are nowhere near as persistent, and you can walk through the castle complex on the headland without elbowing past anyone. The old Seljuk fortress and the Red Tower are still open and completely worth your time. You’ll often have entire stretches of the historic walls to yourself, which feels like a small miracle compared to summer.
The town itself has a split personality this time of year. The tourist strip along the beach road is half-shuttered and a little melancholy, but head inland slightly and you’ll find proper local life – tea houses full, markets running, restaurants serving actual Turkish food rather than the summer approximation. Prices drop noticeably on accommodation.
Is it worth visiting? For beach holidays, genuinely no. For history, hiking the Taurus mountains nearby, and experiencing a Turkish resort town without the performance of itself, yes absolutely. Retired couples, slow travellers, and anyone who likes museums, ruins and quiet dinners will probably love it. Twenty-somethings after pool parties will be miserable.
**Practical tip:** Pack a proper waterproof jacket, not a light rain mac. When it rains here in January it commits fully, and you’ll want to keep exploring rather than hiding in your hotel waiting it out. The castle views after a rain squall clears are honestly spectacular.
