Weather in February: Average high 11.1°C, 50mm rainfall.

# Zakynthos in February: The Real Story

Let me be straight with you. Zakynthos in February is a completely different island to the one plastered across Instagram. Whether that’s a good thing depends entirely on what you’re after.

The weather is genuinely mild but properly moody. Eleven degrees sounds bearable, and it is, but pair that with 50mm of rain spread across the month and you’re looking at grey skies, sudden downpours, and the kind of damp chill that gets into your bones despite the relatively soft temperatures. Pack layers and a decent waterproof, not a sun cream and flip flops.

The crowds are essentially non-existent. Navagio Beach, the famous shipwreck cove that gets absolutely mobbed in summer, will likely have you standing alone wondering why you don’t have it to yourself every time. The main town, Zakynthos Town, feels like an actual place where actual people live rather than a stage set for tourists. That’s genuinely refreshing.

The honest catch is that a lot is simply closed. Many beach bars, boat tour operators, and tourist restaurants shut completely from November through April. You won’t be hiring a speedboat to explore sea caves. The famous loggerhead turtle watching trips aren’t running. Some village tavernas stay open for locals, and you’ll find enough decent food and warmth if you’re willing to explore rather than expecting everything handed to you.

So is it worth going? For certain people, absolutely yes. If you want to hike the interior hills in cool conditions without sweating through your clothes, photograph a dramatically lit winter coastline, or simply decompress somewhere beautiful without another tourist in sight, February delivers something genuinely special. For families expecting beach holidays or people who booked based on summer photos, it will disappoint.

**Practical tip:** Don’t rely on a hire car being automatically available. Many rental offices run reduced fleets or limited hours off-season. Book your car in advance and confirm the pickup the day before. Getting stranded with limited bus routes is a slow, frustrating way to spend a grey Wednesday.
