# Albufeira in March: Honest Thoughts
March in Albufeira is a funny one. You’re essentially getting the Algarve before it remembers it’s supposed to be sunny, and whether that works for you depends entirely on what you’re after.
The temperature sits around 15-16°C, which sounds reasonable until a sea breeze cuts through and you realise your one cardigan wasn’t enough. It’s not cold exactly, more that specific kind of mild that keeps you guessing. Pack layers rather than summer clothes. You’ll get genuine sunshine, sometimes genuinely lovely sunshine, but also grey days and around 45mm of rain spread across the month, usually arriving in moody Atlantic showers rather than all-day downpours. Mornings often look threatening and afternoons improve. That pattern is fairly reliable.
The town itself is quiet in a way that can feel either peaceful or slightly deflating depending on your mood. The Old Town has atmosphere year-round, but walking through Albufeira Strip in March is a strange experience – shutters down, plastic chairs stacked, a few optimistic bars open mostly for each other. If you came for the heaving nightlife, genuinely come back in July. If you find that prospect exhausting, March is your reward.
What is open tends to be the better stuff anyway – local restaurants serving actual Portuguese food at prices that disappear once summer arrives, the fish market, the beaches completely to yourself. The beaches are genuinely spectacular with nobody on them. You won’t swim comfortably, the sea is around 16°C, but walking Praia dos Pescadores on a blustery morning with dramatic clouds feels like you’ve actually found somewhere rather than queued to share it.
It suits couples, solo travellers, anyone who likes hiking the coastal trails without overheating, photographers, people who eat food seriously, and anyone in recovery from a busy life.
**One practical tip:** book restaurants without pressure, but still book. The handful of quality places operating in March fill up because there are fewer of them open. Assume everywhere closes Monday, check before you walk twenty minutes.
Worth it for the right person? Genuinely yes.
