# Alghero in December: The Honest Version

Let’s get the weather out of the way first. Eight or nine degrees with a decent chance of rain means you’re not lying on a beach. The famous turquoise water exists, it’s just going to look grey and slightly menacing rather than Caribbean. Pack a proper jacket and accept this version of the place rather than fighting it.

Here’s what that actually gives you, though. Alghero’s medieval old town, which is genuinely one of the prettiest in Sardinia, becomes yours in a way that’s simply impossible in summer. The narrow coral-stone streets, the sea walls, the Catalan-influenced architecture – you can actually stand still and look at things without being shuffled along by the crowd. Locals reclaim the bars and restaurants, prices drop noticeably, and you get something closer to the real texture of the place.

The crowd situation is excellent, frankly. This is firmly off-season. Most visitors are Italian, often from the mainland, and numbers are low. You’ll get conversation and attention in restaurants that would barely acknowledge you in August.

The catch is closures. Some seafood restaurants shut entirely for winter, a handful of hotels lock up, and boat trips to Neptune’s Grotto are weather-dependent and frequently cancelled. You need to check specifically what you want to do before booking anything, because assumptions will catch you out. The old town itself, the cathedral, the walls, the aperitivo scene – all functioning fine.

Worth it? For certain people, absolutely yes. If you like slow travel, history, good food without performance, and having a genuinely beautiful place feel like it belongs to you, December here is lovely. If you’re expecting Mediterranean sunshine and beach days, you’ll be miserable and resentful.

Retired couples, solo travellers, anyone writing something, people who actually want to eat rather than just photograph food – this is your month.

**Practical tip:** Book accommodation in the old town itself, not outside it. When it’s cold and wet, being able to walk everywhere matters enormously.
