# Amalfi in October: The Honest Version

October on the Amalfi Coast is genuinely lovely, but it asks something of you. That something is tolerance for unpredictability.

The temperature sits around 21-22°C, which sounds perfect, and on the good days it absolutely is. Warm enough to sit outside with a coffee and feel smug about your life choices. The sea is still swimmable for the first half of the month, carrying the residual warmth of summer, and the light has that softer, golden quality that photographers spend whole careers chasing. But 146mm of rainfall means October is legitimately wet. Not drizzly-annoying wet. Proper Mediterranean downpours that arrive from nowhere, bounce off cobblestones, and turn the narrow streets into temporary rivers. You might get four perfect days followed by two completely grey ones. That’s just the reality.

The crowds situation is one of October’s genuine selling points. The full summer horror show is over. You can actually walk through Amalfi town without feeling like you’re being slowly digested by a tour group. Restaurants have breathing room. You might get a table at somewhere decent without a reservation made three weeks in advance. The cliff roads are still busy because the coast never fully empties, but nothing like August, when the bus drivers look like they’re developing stress-related conditions in real time.

Most things remain open through October, though some smaller places begin winding down in the second half, particularly family-run beach clubs and a handful of boutique hotels. The major restaurants, shops, and attractions stay operational. If you’re hoping to combine this with Positano or Ravello, you’ll find the same pattern.

Is it worth it? For couples, solo travellers, and anyone who finds summer crowds actively exhausting, yes, genuinely. Families with young children who need guaranteed beach weather should probably reconsider.

**One practical tip:** Pack a compact umbrella and accept it as part of the kit rather than emergency backup. The people caught off-guard by October rain on the Amalfi Coast are easy to identify. They’re soaking wet and furious.
