Visiting Aqaba in May
# Aqaba in May: What It’s Actually Like
May is genuinely one of the better times to visit Aqaba, and I say that as someone who’s sweated through a July there and deeply regretted it.
Temperatures sit somewhere in the low-to-mid 30s Celsius through most of May, occasionally nudging higher toward the end of the month. It’s warm, properly warm, but it hasn’t yet crossed into that brutal, energy-sapping heat that makes everything feel like a punishment from late June onward. Rainfall is essentially a non-issue – Aqaba is arid almost year-round, so you’re not planning around weather so much as around temperature and your own heat tolerance.
The Red Sea is the whole point here, and in May the water temperature is sitting around a very comfortable 24-25°C. Visibility for snorkeling and diving is excellent, the coral is doing its thing, and you can actually spend meaningful time in the water without rushing back to aircon after twenty minutes. If the reef is why you came, May delivers.
Crowds are moderate. European Easter crowds have cleared out, the summer rush of regional tourists from Jordan, Saudi Arabia, and the Gulf hasn’t properly arrived yet. You’ll find the dive operators and snorkeling boats busy but not overwhelmed, and you can actually get a spot on a day trip without booking weeks ahead. Restaurants and beach clubs are fully open and operating normally.
Is it worth it? For divers, snorkelers, and anyone who wants warmth without punishment, yes, absolutely. For people who struggle in heat generally, the tail end of May can feel like a lot, especially midday. Families with kids do well here in May. Solo travelers wanting a low-key beach stop between Petra and the rest of the country will find it perfectly pleasant.
**Practical tip:** Book your dive or snorkeling trip for early morning, not afternoon. The light is better for seeing the reef anyway, and you’re back at your hotel before the day reaches peak heat. Afternoons are for shade, cold drinks, and doing very little.
