Visiting Bar in December
Visiting Bar in December
# Bar in December: The Off-Season Reality
Bar in December is essentially a different town from the one that exists in summer. The Adriatic resort crowds are gone, the seafront restaurants have their chairs stacked inside, and you’ll find yourself walking along the promenade with almost nobody else around. Whether that sounds appealing or depressing depends entirely on what you’re after.
The weather is genuinely unpredictable. December can bring mild, almost pleasant days where you’re comfortable in a jacket, but it can also deliver grey skies, persistent rain, and a damp cold that gets into old stone buildings surprisingly effectively. The town doesn’t feel built for winter in the way that, say, a mountain resort does. It just quietly waits.
Crowds are minimal to non-existent. This is perhaps the most honest selling point. The old town ruins of Stari Bar are eerie and atmospheric with no other tourists around, and that experience is genuinely special. You can poke around the ancient olive trees and crumbling walls feeling like you’ve stumbled onto something rather than queued for it. The archaeological museum operates reduced hours, so check ahead rather than assuming.
What’s open is patchwork. Some cafes stay open because locals use them year-round. Some restaurants close entirely or open only on weekends. The main market and everyday shops function normally. Don’t arrive expecting a curated tourist experience because you won’t find one.
Is it worth visiting? For certain people, yes. If you’re combining it with Montenegrin travel through less touristy areas, passing through on a coastal drive, or genuinely wanting solitude and some decent coffee with locals who aren’t tired of tourists yet, Bar in December rewards you quietly. If you need beach infrastructure, nightlife, or reliable sunshine, wait until May.
**Practical tip:** The train between Bar and Podgorica is one of the more dramatic rail journeys in the Balkans, passing through mountains and gorges. December timetables run but less frequently, so check the schedule before assuming you can catch an afternoon departure back. Missing it means a taxi or a long wait.
