Visiting Bar in June
# Bar in June: What It’s Actually Like
June is honestly one of the better times to visit Bar, and I say that as someone who’s been there when the summer heat turns the whole Montenegrin coast into a slow-motion sweat parade.
The weather is warm and genuinely pleasant rather than brutal – you’re looking at mid to high twenties Celsius most days, with enough of a breeze coming off the Adriatic to make walking around comfortable. Rainfall is possible, particularly in early June when the Mediterranean climate hasn’t fully committed to its summer personality yet. A brief afternoon shower isn’t unusual, but you’re unlikely to lose entire days to grey skies. Pack a light layer for evenings, which stay lovely rather than sticky.
Crowds are the real story here. Bar doesn’t attract the same frenzied tourism as Kotor or Budva, so June – before the July-August surge – keeps things genuinely relaxed. The beaches aren’t packed, restaurants have actual tables available, and you can wander through Old Bar, the ruined hilltop town above the modern city, without negotiating your way through tour groups. That archaeological site is absolutely worth your time and feels almost eerily quiet in a good way.
Everything is open. Hotels, restaurants, the ferry connections to Bari in Italy – the infrastructure is running properly but not straining. The market near the port is stocked and lively. You’ll find locals actually using the town rather than being displaced by tourism, which changes the atmosphere completely.
Is it worth visiting in June? Yes, especially if you want the coast without the chaos. It suits people who genuinely want to slow down, eat well, drink local wine, and explore without feeling like they’re queuing for a theme park. Families do well here, as do couples who’ve already done the flashier spots and want something more honest.
**Practical tip:** The bus connections from Bar up to Podgorica and along the coast are cheap and reliable. Don’t bother renting a car just for Bar itself – you won’t need it.
