# Skiathos in October: Honest Thoughts
By October, Skiathos has exhaled. The frenetic energy of August — the packed boats to Lalaria, the queue for everything, the sense that you’re sharing a small island with approximately half of northern Europe — has largely dissolved. What’s left is something genuinely pleasant, if you know what you’re walking into.
The weather sits around 18-19°C, which sounds ideal and mostly is. You’ll get warm, sunny days where a swim is absolutely on the cards, particularly in early October. The Aegean holds its summer heat well into autumn, so the sea temperature is still comfortable — often warmer than the air itself. But that 45mm of monthly rainfall has to land somewhere, and when it arrives it arrives properly. Expect a few days of grey skies and serious downpours, not a gentle English drizzle. It passes quickly, but it happens.
Crowds are genuinely thin. The main strip in Skiathos Town still has life — this isn’t a ghost town — but you can walk Koukounaries beach without feeling like you’re at a festival, which in August you absolutely cannot. Restaurants are quieter, staff are unhurried, and nobody is fighting over a sunlounger.
The catch is that things close. Not everything, but enough. Some beach bars and boat hire places pack it in by late September. A handful of restaurants shut for the season. You won’t have every option available, but you’ll have enough, and the ones that stay open are usually the better, more established spots anyway.
Worth visiting? Genuinely yes, for the right person. If you want guaranteed wall-to-wall sun and a buzzing nightlife scene, go in July. But if you want to actually see the island — walk the pine forest trails, sit at a harbour table without being rushed, pay reasonable prices — October works well. Couples, solo travellers, and anyone mildly allergic to peak-season chaos will appreciate it.
**Practical tip:** Pack a proper waterproof layer, not just a light cardigan. When the rain comes, you’ll want it.
