Spring, particularly April and May, stands out as the finest window to explore Cartagena. Temperatures hover comfortably between 18 and 24 degrees Celsius, the streets remain refreshingly uncrowded, and accommodation prices stay genuinely affordable compared to peak summer rates. The city feels alive but never overwhelmed, giving you space to wander the Roman theatre, explore the Carthaginian ruins, and sit at harbourside restaurants without fighting for a table. Flowers bloom across the hillside parks, and the Mediterranean light in these months is exceptionally beautiful for photography.
Summer tells a different story. July and August bring intense heat that regularly pushes above 35 degrees Celsius, and while Spanish visitors and European tourists descend in greater numbers, the city becomes noticeably busier and pricier. The heat can make afternoon sightseeing genuinely uncomfortable, especially around exposed archaeological sites with little shade. Unless you are specifically chasing beach weather and nightlife, summer is honestly the season to think twice about.
September and October mirror the magic of spring, arguably improving on it. The sea remains wonderfully warm from months of summer sun, so swimming is excellent well into October. Crowds thin noticeably after the Spanish school year begins in September, prices drop back to budget-friendly levels, and the relaxed pace returns. October in particular offers golden afternoon light, mild temperatures around 20 to 22 degrees, and the genuine feeling of experiencing a real Spanish city rather than a tourist spectacle.
Winter is perfectly manageable, with temperatures rarely dropping below 10 degrees, but some smaller attractions reduce their hours and the city loses a certain energy. Rain becomes more likely through December and January.
The insider tip worth remembering is targeting the second half of September specifically. The summer crowds have genuinely cleared, yet the warm sea and long evenings feel almost indistinguishable from August, all at noticeably lower costs.
