# Halkidiki in December: The Honest Version

Look, Halkidiki in December is not the place you’ve been dreaming about from those Instagram photos. The famous turquoise water is still there, technically, but nobody is swimming in it. At around 9°C and with a decent chance of rain most weeks, this is firmly coat-and-boots territory.

The weather is genuinely unpredictable. That 65mm of monthly rainfall sounds manageable until it all arrives in three days of horizontal grey misery, followed by a surprisingly crisp, sunny afternoon that makes you feel like you’ve discovered a secret. December here swings between genuinely beautiful and genuinely bleak, sometimes within the same morning.

The crowds are essentially nonexistent. Most of the beach resorts on Kassandra, the first peninsula, are completely shut down. Restaurants closed, hotels shuttered, the whole summer apparatus packed away. Sithonia is slightly more authentic year-round, and you’ll find villages that actually function in winter rather than existing purely for tourists. The third peninsula, Mount Athos, operates on its own timeless schedule entirely.

What’s actually open tends to be local tavernas serving proper food at prices that would make your July self weep with jealousy. Thessaloniki is only an hour away and absolutely worth combining with your trip because that city genuinely thrives in winter.

Is it worth it? For some people, genuinely yes. If you want dramatic coastal scenery without another human being in sight, if you find abandoned seaside places romantic rather than depressing, if you’re interested in Byzantine monasteries and hiking without the heat, December works. Photographers, people escaping everything, couples who like having a beach entirely to themselves even if they won’t swim – these people often love it.

For anyone expecting a holiday in the conventional sun-and-sea sense, this is absolutely the wrong month and you should wait until May.

**Practical tip:** Don’t rely on Google Maps opening hours. Call ahead before driving anywhere specific, because what shows as open in October is frequently closed by December without any online update. Ask your accommodation and they’ll tell you the truth.
