Visiting Cairo in August

Visiting Cairo in August

# Cairo in August: Honest Thoughts

Let me be straight with you: August in Cairo is brutal. The city sits in a desert, and in August it absolutely acts like it. Temperatures regularly hit 37-40°C (98-104°F), sometimes climbing higher, and the heat has a particular quality to it – dry, relentless, and bouncing off concrete and stone in ways that make midday feel genuinely oppressive. Rainfall is essentially a non-event; you might see a few millimetres across the entire month, and even that would surprise most locals.

**What it’s actually like on the ground**

By 11am the city is cooking. The air around the Pyramids shimmers, the stones radiate heat back at you, and any exposed skin starts complaining quickly. Dust haze is common, which can soften photographs in ways you didn’t plan for. Cairo itself is a massive, chaotic, wonderful city regardless of season, but August adds a layer of physical exhaustion to every outing.

**Crowds and what’s open**

Here’s the interesting part: August is actually quieter than you’d expect at major sites. International tourism dips sharply because sensible people check the forecast first. Egyptian families are often travelling too, particularly toward the coast. The Pyramids, Egyptian Museum, and Khan el-Khalili bazaar all stay open, and you may find yourself with noticeably more breathing room than peak winter visitors get.

**Is it worth going?**

For budget-conscious travellers who genuinely don’t mind heat, yes – you’ll find better hotel rates and thinner crowds at the Pyramids, which is genuinely rare. For families with young children, elderly travellers, or anyone with heat sensitivity, honestly wait. October through April is objectively more comfortable and you’ll simply enjoy it more.

**One practical tip**

Plan your entire sightseeing schedule around the heat. Be at the Pyramids or any outdoor site by 7am, retreat indoors between noon and 4pm, then venture out again in the evening. Cairo’s evenings are actually lovely – warm, lively, and far more manageable. Fighting the midday sun is a battle you’ll lose.
