# Cannes in December: The Off-Season Truth
Look, Cannes in December is a completely different city to the one you’ve seen in magazine spreads. And honestly? For the right person, that’s exactly the appeal.
The weather is genuinely mild but don’t let anyone tell you it’s the Riviera sunshine you’re imagining. At around 13°C, you’ll want a proper jacket, and with over 80mm of rain falling across the month, there’s a reasonable chance at least two or three of your days get properly rained out. It’s not miserable Northern European grey, but it’s not cocktails-in-a-sundress weather either. Pack layers and waterproof shoes rather than sandals.
What you get in return is a town that actually breathes. The Croisette, normally a slow-moving parade of luxury coaches and selfie sticks, becomes genuinely pleasant to walk. You can stroll the entire boulevard without once being shoulder-barged. Restaurants that spend summer turning tables every 45 minutes will actually want your company and give you proper service. Some smaller shops and a handful of restaurants do close for a few weeks, so it’s worth checking ahead, but the main strip and most attractions stay open.
The Marché Forville is still running and worth an hour of your morning. The ferry to Île Sainte-Marguerite runs on a reduced schedule but does operate, and crossing to that quiet island with almost nobody else there is genuinely special. The old quarter of Le Suquet looks beautiful decorated for Christmas without being overcrowded.
Is it worth visiting? If you’re a beach holiday person, no, skip it entirely. But if you’re someone who enjoys European cities without the performance of peak season, who wants good food, long lunches, and the ability to actually look at things without queuing, December Cannes works really well. It suits couples, older travellers, and anyone who finds summer tourism exhausting.
**Practical tip:** Book a hotel on the Croisette itself. Rates drop dramatically in December, sometimes by 60-70%, and you might as well stay in the grand dame hotels at sensible human prices while you can.
