Here’s the honest truth about May in Cefalu: it’s genuinely one of the better times to go, but not for the reasons the travel blogs usually trot out.

The weather sits in that sweet spot where it’s warm enough to actually enjoy yourself — typically somewhere in the low-to-mid twenties Celsius — without the suffocating heat that turns July into an endurance test. You’ll get plenty of sunshine, though May does carry some rainfall risk, and afternoon showers aren’t unusual. It’s not constant or dramatic, just Mediterranean unpredictability. Pack a light layer for evenings because once the sun drops, the temperature follows faster than you’d expect.

Crowds are building but haven’t fully arrived yet. The beach won’t be packed, which matters because Cefalu’s main strip gets genuinely rammed in peak summer. You can actually walk along the seafront without navigating a human obstacle course, and the famous Norman cathedral doesn’t require strategic planning to enter. Restaurants are open and staffed properly — unlike early spring when some places are still running skeleton crews or haven’t reopened at all.

Everything you actually want access to is functioning: the Duomo with its extraordinary Byzantine mosaics, the medieval streets behind the main drag, the Rocca fortress hike above town. That hike is worth doing early morning regardless, but in May the heat won’t punish you the way it does in August.

Is it worth visiting? For most people, genuinely yes. If you want to actually swim in the sea, know that the water is still pretty cold — Italians won’t be in it. If beach lounging is your primary goal, you might leave slightly frustrated. But if you’re there for the town itself, the food, the atmosphere, and some genuinely beautiful scenery without feeling like you’re trapped in a queue, May delivers.

**One practical tip:** Book accommodation early anyway. May has grown in popularity significantly, and the decent options in the old town specifically — not the hotel strip outside — go fast.
